Hotel Riu Cancún is the bigger, louder half of the two adults-only Riu resorts at Punta Cancún, and usually the cheaper one. Where Riu Palace Las Americas next door is 372 suites and quiet, this is a large-scale resort with four outdoor pools, six restaurants and the Pacha discotheque on site and included.
It is adults-only — 18 and over — which surprises people who remember it as a family property. That changed, and the whole resort now runs on the social, upbeat register rather than the kids'-club one.
The beach is the reason it's on this site. Km 9 puts it right at Punta Cancún on the north-facing bay sand — calm swimmable water, and the stretch that dodges most of the sargassum that closes the southern beaches in peak season. The look inside is Riu's Mediterranean-Moroccan style: hand-painted ceilings, mosaic domes, and the in-room beverage dispensers the brand is known for.

Riu Cancún sits at Km 9, right on Punta Cancún — the corner where the Hotel Zone stops running east along Bahía de Mujeres and turns south down the open Caribbean. It sits on the north side of that corner, which is what gives it calm, swimmable water instead of surf.
This is the most walkable spot on the strip. The Convention Center is about three minutes on foot, Caracol Beach around five, and the Coco Bongo and Forum by the Sea nightlife cluster is right there. Riu Palace Las Americas is next door at Km 8.5. The airport runs roughly 20–25 minutes.
Sargassum exposure
Riu Cancún sits directly on Punta Cancún with its sand facing north into Bahía de Mujeres, tucked behind the headland — so the Atlantic rafts that bury the east-facing beaches in peak season largely track past it. It shares this position with Riu Palace Las Americas next door and Coral Beach just up the point.
Through the worst of the April–August window, the calm-water beaches at Punta Cancún and north of it routinely stay usable on days the southern strip is closed for raking. Treat that as strong odds rather than a guarantee: a big enough influx reaches everywhere, and every beachfront resort here rakes its sand daily.
